Quick Links To Questions
We get our milk from independent dairy farms in Southern Oregon and Northern California. Where are your products made? Our products are made at our processing plant in Roseburg, Oregon. The milk received from our farmers is separated right here in our facility and is usually used within 24 hours to manufacture our dairy products. Is Umpqua Dairy locally owned?Yes. The company was founded in March, 1931 by Ormond Feldkamp and Herb Sullivan. Today, ownership has successfully transferred to the third generation Feldkamps. Doug and Steve Feldkamp keep Umpqua Dairy running smoothly as the largest family-owned dairy in Southern Oregon. Where are your products sold?Umpqua Dairy ice cream products are sold throughout Oregon, Southwestern and Eastern Washington, and on the Northern California coast. Our fluid milk products which include cottage cheese, sour cream, butter, and milk are distributed from the Roseburg facility through a distributor network and 5 distribution centers located in Portland, Klamath Falls, Grants Pass, Coos Bay, and Eugene. These products are sold from the California border north to Portland, east from Bend to Klamath Falls, and on the Oregon coast from Lincoln City south to Brookings. What does the Quality Chekd symbol mean?Quality Chekd is a national trademark which represents the stringent requirements our products must meet to be recognized as the highest quality in the marketplace. What is rBST/rBGH?rBST/rBGH (recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone aka Bovine Somotropin) is a synthetic growth hormone which is administered at some dairy farms to cows as a supplement to improve their efficiency in producing milk. Do you use rBST/rBGH in you products? It is against Umpqua Dairy's policy to accept milk from cows treated with rBST/rBGH, the synthetic growth hormone. Our contracted dairy farmers sign a certificate stating that they do not use rBST. Is your ice cream gluten-free?Currently, Umpqua Dairy does not use a stabilizer with a wheat base, however we are unable to guarantee that our products are entirely gluten-free because trace amounts of oat, rice and wheat gluten may be found in many of our flavors. The lowest traces of gluten would be in base flavors like Plain Vanilla, Plain Chocolate, and French Vanilla. Flavors such as Cookie Dough, Lemon Creme Pie, and Pumpkin Pie a la Mode do contain wheat in the dough / pie pieces. Why did you switch to a white jug?We switched to a white jug, instead of the clear plastic milk containers most commonly used, because studies have shown that light degrades the taste and quality of milk *. Essential vitamins, including Vitamin A, Riboflavin (B2), and Vitamin C begin to break down when exposed to the fluorescent lights often found in dairy cases. UV light also changes the flavor and fresh taste of milk through a process known as light induced oxidation. With the white light-blocking jug, Umpqua Dairy milk retains its nutritional benefits while maintaining its delicious flavor. *Studies done at Cornell University; College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Ithaca, NY; Dairy Science Facts 2002. How do you determine new ice cream flavors?New ice cream flavors are determined at committee meetings held three times per year. The committee is made up of 6-8 Umpqua Dairy employees representing different aspects of our business (Production, Sales, Marketing, Purchasing and Distribution). We meet and determine flavors for the season based on previous year sales, historical data, customer requests, new flavor additions and seasonal favorites. Continual research is always being done for possible new flavors. What are your most popular flavors of ice cream?Umpqua Dairy's award winning Vanilla, French Vanilla and Vanilla Bean are the three top selling ice creams. Rocky Road, Cookie Dough, Mountain Blackberry Revel and Chocolate Peanut Butter ice creams are close behind. Why does your milk stay fresher, longer?Umpqua Dairy has an independent milk supply from local farmers that ship directly to our plant. These farms participate in Umpqua Dairy's quality bonus program that encourages best farm practices and higher raw milk quality. When we receive milk at our plant we immediately test the raw milk at our own in-house state-certified lab, to make sure that it meets our stringent quality guidelines. In our process we work hard to get the product from the farm to the consumer as quickly as possible. We use consistent techniques and a modern up to date plant that is fully automated to ensure the cleaning and sanitation of our equipment is done thoroughly and effectively. A combination of these controls enable us to offer our quality guarantee that our milk will still be fresh up to 5 days after the code date.
